Cherbourg State Primary School - Cherbourg Kids - Strong Smart Fit Healthy

Cherbourg State Primary School (the School) is located in the South Burnett Region and has a majority of Indigenous students who embrace their culture in their day to day activities.

The School formed partnerships with Barambah Regional Medical Centre, the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council and Cherbourg Community Health with support from the Department of Communities, to provide students with a wide range of nutrition and sporting, camping, traditional games and recreation activities as part of the school programs.

The School promoted the 'Go for 2 and 5' message (i.e. eat 2 pieces of fruit and 5 vegetables per day) and introduced regular 'tasting' days so the students had the opportunity to expand their experience of healthy foods.  All students are offered fruit to eat five mornings a week.

'Deadly Dinners' were also introduced, where students planned, prepared and shared nutritional dinners with their family members at the school each term.

The School's Physical Education program was improved to provide a wider variety of sporting activities, games and active leisure activities.  Equipment is available to students every day before school and during lunch breaks and a training program has been introduced for representative team members in athletics, football and netball.

An extensive active outdoor education and camping program for all students from Year 3 - 7 improved their skills and knowledge in environmental education and camping.

The whole School participated in a swimming and water safety program and showed significant improvement in stroke and fitness.

All students from Year 4 - 7 also participated in a surf awareness program in partnership with Alexander Headlands Surf Club.

A Queensland Government grant of $36 000 was provided under the Eat Well Be Active Community Partnerships Program to deliver this project.
